Description

John McArthur was born in Nelson in 1941. He completed a Bachelor of Arts in Geography at the University of Canterbury in 1961, before gaining his Teacher’s Certificate in 1962. He gained a university blue in yachting and played senior representative basketball for Canterbury B.

John taught at Akaroa District High School before returning to Canterbury to complete a Master of Arts in 1964. In 1966 he began a PhD at the University of Sheffield which he completed before returning to New Zealand in 1970 to take-up a position in the Geography Department at Massey University, Palmerston North where he remained until his retirement in 1997. John died in 2021 and left a bequest to be used to support research at Massey University.
