About

The Automotive Systems Design program from Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) offers a technological designer program on a doctorate level for MSc graduates (or similar level) in the field of automotive technology, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, embedded systems, systems & control, applied physics, aerospace engineering, or similar.

Overview

There are two options to follow this program:

  • Apply for a traineeship as a full-time job at TU/e. If you are hired you will become a TU/e employee for two years.
  • In case you are already employed in industry, you can ask for admission for a traineeship. For this you will need the permission from your employer. We plan the program activities together with you in such a way that you can combine it with your job as good as possible. The maximum duration for this company-EngD traineeship is three years.

The  Automotive Systems Design program from  Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e)  starts with a year of advanced education, followed by a graduation design project of twelve months for industry. For company-EngD trainees the first year can be performed in maximum two years. A company-EngD trainee will perform the graduation design project for the company he/she is employed.

Since a few decades the automotive industry changed into a high tech sector facing huge challenges in terms of multidisciplinary product and process engineering. The trend towards smart components and systems is a strong driver for the Dutch automotive sector, and requires new generations of engineers with additional skills and training. Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) plays an important role in the high tech automotive industry, especially in the Brainport region (Eindhoven–Helmond).

General requirements

  • Affinity with technology, keen interest in and good awareness of the current technological developments; knowledge of and affinity with the automotive field; experience with Matlab/Simulink or similar; preferably knowledge of vehicle dynamics, and classical feedback control theory (or extended knowledge of other fields that are in high demand in the automotive sector, such as sensors, vision, machine learning, deep learning, artificial intelligence, advanced driver assistant systems, automated driving, and electric vehicles);
  • An academic, critical attitude and a good awareness of the state of the art in engineering design for high tech systems, most notable in the area of the Master thesis project;
  • The ability to choose and apply methods, tools, and techniques to solve actual, practical problems;
  • The ability to stay abreast of current developments in the field of automotive;
