Overview
At Art History from the University of Johannesburg the candidate is required to produce a scholarly thesis, normally between 70 000 and 80 000 words, that contributes new knowledge and understanding to an aspect of the visual arts or an aspect of visual culture in a wider sense.
The topic of study is identified by the candidate himself or herself, in consultation with an appointed supervisor, and is developed into a proposal that must be approved by the Higher Degrees Committee of the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture.

- have the background knowledge and understanding of the discipline and its methodologies and approaches to produce a thesis which meets international standards of scholarly writing.
