Overview

The Department of English works to provide its students with a thorough understanding of literatures written in English; to train them for teaching in two- and four-year colleges and in research universities; where appropriate, to transfer and develop those research, communication, and presentation skills to non-academic settings; and to assist them in obtaining appropriate employment inside or outside higher education.

Learning outcomes for English at the University of Miami

Students will demonstrate knowledge of literatures written in English and master methods of literary and cultural analysis.

Students will develop a capacity for professional development, enabling the graduate to contribute to a profession or field of study.

Original academic transcripts (by mail, posted to the Director of Graduate Studies)

GRE general test scores

Applicants must rank in the 65% percentile or higher in the Quantitative Reasoning test. There is no minimal score requirement for the other parts of the GRE.

Students from non-English speaking countries must send either TOEFL or IELTS scores.

Three letters of recommendation.

For international students: this form for financial responsibility (required by the US government)

Optional: For Ph.D. applications, this form to apply for an assistantship.
