Overview
Why Photonics?
Photonics is a dynamic physical science which focusses on light itself and the technology for research areas such as Quantum, Metamaterials, Optic Design, Nanophotonics or Ultrafast, and innovative branches of industry (Telecommunications, Renewable Energy, Medicine, Metrology, Entertainment…), which drives technological development in the 21st century.
Key facts
- During the research phase, PhD candidates of the Max Planck School of Photonics focus on the scientific research for their PhD projects. This research is conducted within a research group led and supervised by one of our MPSP Fellows. The PhD candidates are also assigned a co-supervisor, ideally located at another MPSP research institution. Close supervision is ensured through regular meetings and progress reports.
- The PhD candidates are offered various training opportunities and workshops on social and professional skills such as project management or start-up leadership and organisation, as well as more discipline-specific expert seminars. These courses are held either through our virtual campus or during the MPSP spring and autumn schools. They also give our PhD candidates the chance to meet and connect with each other and with the MPSP Fellows.
