Overview
The Industrial and Systems Engineering PhD program from University of Michigan - Dearborn is designed to equip you with the cutting-edge knowledge, technical skills, and abilities to conduct original, high-quality translational research in industrial and systems engineering.
To lessen financial concerns, all PhD students receive full funding in the form of appointments as a graduate student instructor, a research assistant, or both. The appointments provide a monthly stipend, health insurance, and a tuition waiver. Students are guaranteed full funding for up to five years provided they maintain good academic standing and adequate progress toward their degree.
You largely design your own comprehensive program. The requirements will vary based on your educational background, but your program will typically include:
- A seminar in PhD research methodology
- Nine credits of core courses
- Nine credits of courses you choose from one of three concentration areas: integrated design and manufacturing, operations research and decision science, or human factors and ergonomics
- Four credits of cognate courses in computer and information science, electrical and computer engineering, mechanical engineering, mathematics and statistics, or psychology.
- Twenty-four credits for a PhD dissertation

General requirements
- A master’s degree in engineering, applied mathematics, computer science, or a physical science from an accredited program.
- To be eligible for the program, students are required to have completed three semesters or 12 credit hours of calculus and a course in linear algebra.
- One course in operations research, one course in calculus-based probability and statistics, and knowledge of computer programming.
- A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher on a 4-point scale for the B.S. degree and 3.5 or higher on a 4-point scale for the master’s degree.
- Foreign applicants whose native language is not English or do not have a degree from an English-speaking institution must provide the Test of English as a Foreign Languages (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score. A minimum score of 84 on IBT TOEFL or 6.5 on IELTS is required for admission.
- Three letters of recommendation, at least one of which must come from former faculty.
