Overview
Through its research and training programmes, the University fosters an open-minded approach to legal analysis, going beyond the boundaries of national jurisdictions, to promote comparative cross-disciplinary research, within a multilingual environment (English, French and German) and an international academic team.
In accordance with its commitment to an open-minded European and international perspective, the school organizes opportunities for scientific cooperation and exchanges with universities worldwide. This facilitates student mobility in terms of international research placements. At the same time, the school welcomes young researchers, students from abroad, and the co-supervision of doctoral theses.
Objectives
The Law programme from University of Luxembourg offers both theoretical and practical training, providing a useful background for writing a thesis and adopting a broad scientific culture. The training aims to equip PhD students with the necessary epistemological and methodological tools for pursuing a rigorous research project and introduce them to a cross-disciplinary and multidisciplinary culture.
The doctoral school of law aims to achieve the following objectives:
- To support and enhance the legal education of doctoral students,
- To advance and build upon current research methodology,
- To cultivate an academic culture and an open-minded mentality among PhD students in the framework of a cross-disciplinary and multidisciplinary approach,
- To promote immersion in different legal cultures worldwide.
Programme Structure
- The programme responds to the needs of PhD candidates educated in different legal systems and prepares them for competitive academic and non-academic future carriers.
- General skills and methods courses are combined with specific training in legal topics, including themes attached to externally funded research programmes on doctoral education.
- In addition to the creation of a stimulating research environment among PhD researchers through its own activities, the Doctoral School in Law favors mobility and supports participation in conferences and academic events at other academic institutions.

- You are eligible to apply for admission to doctoral studies at the University of Luxembourg if you hold a Master's degree (or equivalent), as defined in the law (see University law art. 32, 3, and the Study regulations, Chapter 1); please be aware that Master's degrees from outside Europe need to be equivalent to level 7 as defined in the Luxembourgish law on the recognition of degrees.
