About

The Cognitive Neuroscience and Neuroimaging PhD programme is from University of York as an internationally renowned research department we have a vibrant community of research postgraduates.

Overview

This Cognitive Neuroscience and Neuroimaging PhD programme is from University of York  provides a stimulating yet supportive atmosphere, combined with access to superb research facilities. Our research postgraduates work closely with leading researchers in their chosen field and their projects are often published in top international journals.

We offer full-time and part-time research degrees leading to MPhil and PhD qualifications in all areas of research covered by members of faculty. In Psychology, we offer a PhD in Psychology and a PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience and Neuroimaging. In addition to the core programme, we also offer a PhD in Psycholinguistics jointly with Education and Language and Linguistic Sciences. In collaboration with CITY College University of York Europe Campus, we offer a York-CITY Collaborative PhD in Psychology with PhD students based at CITY College, Thessaloniki, Greece.

Our philosophy:

  • We regard a research degree as an apprenticeship, providing training in the knowledge and skills required to be an independent researcher.

  • You will specialise in a relatively narrow subject area and conduct novel research to advance our knowledge of that area, meaning that by the end of your degree you are an expert in your topic.

  • Whilst you will acquire in-depth knowledge and a specialised skill set through conducting exciting research projects alongside your supervisors, you will also receive broader training in research skills and psychological knowledge, that are widely applicable to both academic and non academic settings.

Programme Structure

Other requirements

General requirements

  • All students give a 15-20 minute presentation about their research project to the department, in each of their three years of study. This is an invaluable opportunity to get helpful feedback on the project and to develop presentation skills.

  • All PhD students prepare written work (literature survey, empirical study and a PhD plan) for assessment 12-18 months after starting their PhD (full time). At this juncture the suitability of the student for PhD study is formally assessed and PhD registration is either confirmed or the student is advised to change their registration to an MPhil degree.

  • We strongly encourage and support our PhD students to submit their final thesis detailing the research work conducted during their degree within 3 years, however if required, writing up can continue into a fourth year. The thesis must be submitted within 4 years.
