Through the research that leads to the dissertation and papers, a graduate develops the ability to evaluate the research at the forefront of biomedical engineering based on knowledge of the relevant literature and applicable research methodologies.

The defining characteristic of this qualification is that the candidate is required to demonstrate high level independent research capability and to make a significant and original contribution at the frontiers of biomedical engineering knowledge.

The PhD in Biomedical Engineering programme from Stellenbosch University typically requires three years of full-time research (the minimum period is two years), culminating in a dissertation that describes original research and at least two paperssuitable for publication in research journals. The PhD normally follows after a research-based master's degree.

Programme Structure

Curriculum:

Due to the interdisciplinary character of the programme, students will normally have a supervisor in one faculty and at least one co-supervisor in another faculty.

Supplementary coursework (non-credit bearing) may be required of students who do not have the necessary background for their research.

Supplementary modules may be prescribed by the supervisors and/or the IBE Postgraduate Admissions Committee.
