Overview

Students may earn the degree in each of two areas: English Literature and English Language. Indeed, the University of British Columbia English Department is one of the few departments in North America to offer a language program in addition to its literary programs.

Features

The English Language program includes specializations in history and structure of language, discourse and genre analysis, and history and theory of rhetoric.

Faculty members in the Language program teach and supervise research in descriptive linguistics, historical linguistics, cognitive linguistics, functional grammar, semantics, pragmatics, discourse analysis, stylistics, genre studies, and history and theory of rhetoric.

All applicants have to submit transcripts from all past post-secondary study. Document submission requirements depend on whether your institution of study is within Canada or outside of Canada.

A minimum of three references are required for application to graduate programs at UBC. References should be requested from individuals who are prepared to provide a report on your academic ability and qualifications.

Many programs require a statement of interest, sometimes called a "statement of intent", "description of research interests" or something similar.
