Since the founding of the graduate program in 1964 at Brown University, Comparative Literature has evolved to include not only Western cultures, both ancient and modern, but also Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Arabic.

The department, in cooperation with the various literature departments and programs, offers a wide array of courses in literature, literary theory, and cultural studies.

Programme Structure

Curriculum:

The faculty includes over twenty-five members of professorial rank with appointments wholly or partly in the department.

As members of a medium-sized department in a relatively small university, graduate students enjoy unusual opportunities for close contact in and outside of the classroom.

Students receive close guidance, including job–search preparation.

The program accommodates a wide range of individual emphases in literature and culture, periods, genres, history, criticism, and theory. We hold several colloquia, lectures, and forums each year.

All applicants are required to submit a personal statement regarding their interests and/or intended areas of study.

We strongly encourage applicants to submit a scanned image of the transcript at the time of application, which can speed processing; however, a final, official transcript will be required of all admitted students who matriculate.

The Graduate School requires three letters of recommendation by persons well qualified to speak from first-hand knowledge about the applicant's potential for graduate study.

Applicants to programs requiring the Graduate Record Examination must have their results to the Graduate School or, if applying to one of the programs in the School of Public Health, to a separate Brown University code.
