Overview
Research
We are a large department of human and physical geographers conducting world-leading research that addresses pressing social and environmental challenges.
Our aim is to be a global node for Geography research – a destination and conduit for outstanding researchers from a wide range of countries and backgrounds. Our research clusters at Durham University function as centres of gravity for new ideas, for experimentation, and for maintaining an environment that maximises our collective research strengths.
As we move across boundaries and forge new areas of inquiry, we foster a research culture that is open, ambitious, flexible, and adventurous. This ethos is one we are purposeful about, as staff and students at all levels collaborate to advance scholarship and to share knowledge with communities and partners.

General requirements
- The first stage is to secure the agreement by at least one member of academic staff to supervise your doctoral research. To do this, you will need to define your research interests so you can identify potential academic staff working in the appropriate field to contact and open discussions around your topic.
- The second stage is to apply to the Durham Geography Doctoral Programme. The application is made online. You will need to submit details and evidence of your academic qualifications to date, a research proposal and, if appropriate, certification of a recognised English language qualification.
- The third stage is to apply for funding to support your studies. We review applications to the programme on academic merits only and, as such, the second stage is completely independent of third.
