Overview

The Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry PhD degree from University of Pisa in addition to the traditional areas, i.e. analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry and industrial chemistry, interdisciplinary research is cultivated in the field of biotechnology and materials engineering. To this end, use will be made of both an excellent teaching path and a network of collaborations with the best research groups in Italy and abroad in both the academic and industrial worlds.

In addition to the courses, doctoral students will have to follow research seminars organized within the Department of Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry and by other related departments on topics of interest to the DSCM. The teachings organized for the DSCM will be carried out in English by the best invited Italian and foreign teachers who work in the sector of Chemical and Materials Sciences.

The educational path will be based on the achievement of two main objectives:

the acquisition by the doctoral student of an in-depth knowledge of the theoretical and experimental methodologies and the most advanced computational and instrumental techniques for the study of molecular systems and nanomaterials;
the doctoral student's development of the ability to carry out his research independently but at the same time integrated into an international network.

Programme Structure

To achieve these objectives, the DSCM, lasting three years, will be structured in a first year in which teaching will be mainly focused on achieving objective 1) and in the following two years in which the aim will instead be to achieve objective 2).
More in detail, in the first year doctoral students will have to follow at least two courses (for a total of at least 4 CFU) organized for the DSCM and another course (for a total of other 3 CFU) which can be borrowed from the Master's Degree courses in Chemistry and Chemistry. Industrial and/or related (Biology, Physics, etc.). At the end of each course, doctoral students will have to pass an oral test on the course topics.

Candidates who possess a foreign academic degree equivalent in level, nature, contents and academic rights (access to further courses) to the Italian academic qualification required for admission to a PhD program may provide the consular documents of the academic degree (translation, legalization and declaration of value) with the sole aim to facilitate the evaluation of eligibility of the academic degree for admission to the PhD program.
The application for admission is in any case subject to the evaluation, by the examining board or the PhD Council, of the eligibility of the foreign academic degree for enrolment in the PhD program.
Candidates are strongly recommended to attach to the application for admission, in addition to the aforementioned consular documents (translation, legalization, declaration of value), also other documents useful for the evaluation of the foreign degree.
