About the programme
The Faculty of Law at the University of Pretoria has as its mission the creation and sustenance of a research and education environment that is grounded in values of social justice and excellence.
As the law is increasingly becoming multifaceted and in certain areas more global, the Faculty maintains professional relations with many international bodies, such as the United Nations (UN), the European Union (EU), the World Bank and foreign universities.
Programme Structure
Structure:
- A doctoral study is assessed on the basis of a doctoral thesis in the traditional format or in the form of a collection of published works, creative works and/or other scholarly contributions (articles and essays etc.).
- Oral defense: The faculty regulations may determine that an oral defense should form part of the academic requirements for the qualification.
- A professional doctorate is assessed on the outcome of the research component as well as the required coursework modules in accordance with the approved faculty regulations.

General requirements
Relevant master’s degree or relevant degree from a foreign university that allows entrance to a doctoral degree (SAQA level 9)
At least 65% for the research component at master’s level or below 65% for the research component at master’s level:
- relevant work experience
- other academic qualifications and
- the merit of the research topic
An admissions examination may be required
A portfolio consisting of:
- copy of the preceding master’s research component
- recent research-based essays or assignments
- a letter of motivation
