The department has a doctoral programme in Information Studies with students with a background in information studies, archival studies and museum and cultural heritage studies.

- Doctoral students and teachers at Uppsala University participate in the activities organised under the auspices of the Swedish Network for Doctoral Education in Information Studies and the Nordic Research School in Library and Information Science (NORSLIS) and its successors.

A person meets the general entry requirements for PhD Programmes if he or she:
- has been awarded a second-cycle qualification;
- has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle; or
- has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.
