Studying foreign languages at university offers the opportunity to understand people, cultures and histories in their original languages. Research

Languages and Cultures researchers at the University of St Andrews carry out world-leading projects, both individually and collaboratively, in Arabic, Chinese Studies, Comparative Literature, French and Francophone Studies, Iberian and Latin American Studies, Italian, Persian and Russian.

As a doctoral (PhD) student in the School of Modern Languages you will be part of a vibrant interdisciplinary postgraduate community. You will work with academic supervisors who will provide you with subject expertise and guidance to help you plan and manage your research while the School’s researcher development programmes give you the skills you need as an independent researcher.
