About the program

The focus of the program at the Memorial University of Newfoundland is on research areas in processing and utilizing various natural resources to produce all types of high-value added products safely and sustainably.

Specifically, research in the Department of Process Engineering covers the topics of chemical and biochemical conversion of natural resources (forestry, food processing, oil and gas, and mineral industries) into useful intermediate industrial chemicals and ultimately end products; green recovery of valuable metals from low grade ores; contaminant removal (desulfurization, deoxygentation etc.) from solid fuels, crude oil and natural gas; modeling, design, simulation and optimal control of complex reactions, separation and integrated reaction-separation processes, etc.

design/development of processes to convert waste to bio-fuels and bio-products
safety and risk engineering
biochemical conversion processes
sustainability engineering
waste to energy
process modelling and control of the processing plants
