Overview
The purpose of this Biomechanical investigation of activities of daily living pre- and post- varying surgical approaches to hip joint arthroplasty project at University of Dundee is to begin to address a gap in the knowledge base.
Context
Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a commonly performed surgery, close to 100,000 procedures were performed in the UK alone in 2022. Generally, it is a successful and cost-effective procedure and provides pain relief and other quality of life improvements for patients. However there does also remain a selection of patients who do not experience the level of functional improvements or satisfaction that might be expected. Several approaches have been developed over the years for THA, including the posterior approach, the direct lateral approach, and the direct anterior approach. In part influenced by increasing demand for minimally invasive and tissue sparing surgical approaches, and in further part influenced by increasing demands on healthcare providers, the direct anterior approach (DAA) has been gaining popularity in recent years.
