Penn State Dickinson Law is the oldest law school in Pennsylvania and one of the oldest in the United States. For over 185 years, Penn State Dickinson Law has produced some of the world’s finest attorneys, judges, government and corporate leaders, and legal scholars.
The Doctor of Juridical Science (S.J.D.) programme from PennState Dickinson Law offers a flexible course of study that allows students to pursue supervised research leading to the production of a dissertation that should serve as an original and valuable contribution to legal scholarship. While the structure of the S.J.D. programme can vary, the degree generally requires three years, one of which is spent in residence in Carlisle. Programme Structure
- S.J.D. students are required to successfully complete Research Methods (2 credits) and Research Colloquium (2 credits). With approval, S.J.D. students may enroll in additional Penn State Dickinson Law courses. The S.J.D. Programme Committee and/or the appropriate faculty supervisor may require additional coursework. S.J.D. students are required to remain enrolled in full-time status throughout the duration of their studies.

- Applicants must submit a research proposal (usually less than 10 pages) that describes the proposed research topic, the research questions to be pursued, and the research methodology. The proposal should also provide a clear rationale for how the proposed research will make an original and significant contribution to a particular field of legal scholarship.
