Educational Opportunity

To satisfy the language requirement for the Ph.D., the student must demonstrate either a reading, writing, and speaking knowledge of one foreign language at the “intermediate-mid” level or a reading knowledge of one foreign language at the “advanced-plus” level as these terms are defined in the American Council of Teachers of Foreign Language guidelines.

All Ph.D. History students from Kansas State University must complete the foreign language requirement prior to the taking of the qualifying examination. Students whose specializations in history require skills in more than one foreign language may be required by their supervisory committees to demonstrate such proficiency.

Programme Structure

The qualifying examination includes separate examinations in a geographically and chronologically defined general field (medieval, early modern, or modern Europe; United States; or modern South Asia) and three special fields, one of which must offer a mode of understanding that is significantly different from the dissertation field or be from outside history.

General requirements

All international students admitted to the Graduate School must demonstrate the same level of achievement as U.S. students. That is, they must hold a degree from an established institution comparable to a college or university in the United States, have an outstanding undergraduate record, have the demonstrated ability to do graduate work, and provide evidence of language proficiency sufficient for the pursuit of a graduate degree.
Admission may be denied to students from technical schools, which may provide excellent training in special areas, but do not offer degrees equivalent to those of colleges and universities. As a rule, students from abroad are not admitted to nondegree status (that is, as special students). Questions about the qualifications of international students should be directed to the Graduate School.
