History
The Department of Neurosurgery was established in 1914, during a major reorganization of the Surgery Department at The Mount Sinai Hospital, by Dr. Charles A. Elsberg—Mount Sinai’s "Father of Neurosurgery.” Since our inception in 1914, our department has been leading the way in neurological research and surgical care.

Student services
Our student advisory services begin during orientation and continue throughout all years of school. We encourage you to communicate with faculty advisors whenever questions or problems arise. The Office for Student Affairs can help facilitate advisors who will meet specific academic needs.
Housing services
Our Real Estate Division provides on campus and block leased housing for students, residents and postdoctoral fellows. We are committed to providing housing that suits your professional and educational needs.
New York City can be a difficult place to find affordable housing, so our Postdoc Housing Committee meets quarterly with the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS) Real Estate Department to discuss any issues related to postdoc housing. We have a number of housing resources available for you and we encourage you to bring your concerns to the committee, which is made up of faculty and Postdoctoral Fellows.
Library services
The Levy Library supports the education, research, and clinical information needs of the Mount Sinai Health System, including the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. The Library is a unit of Mount Sinai's Academic Informatics and Technology division.
ICT services
The Academic IT Support Center distributes site-licensed software for use on Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS) workstations and laptop computers. Licenses are available for a variety of products from Microsoft, Adobe, MathWorks, SAS, and SPSS. Fill out the below appropriate request form to obtain software. For Endnote, please contact ASCIT.
Medical services
The Student Health Center’s mission is to provide high-quality care to all students. We offer physical exams, illness visits, vaccine administration, sexually transmitted infection and HIV testing, gynecologic exams, and medication refills. We also offer travel consultation (before your appointment, check with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for your vaccine and medication needs).
