History
Originally founded as the Leicester School of Art in 1870, the university has evolved through many incarnations including the Leicester Colleges of Art and Technology and Leicester Polytechnic.
The university has grown and evolved over the years, but it is still dedicated to providing inspirational teaching to students and is proud to have a significant impact on the world around it.
Education
At De Montfort University (DMU) we offer undergraduate and postgraduate courses, foundation courses, full-time and part-time courses and Learning Beyond Registration modules, among others. Latest figures show more than 97 per cent of DMU graduates from summer 2017 are now in work or further study, above the UK average.
Research
De Montfort University has an ambitious Research Strategy which aims to make research central to our mission as a university. As a university committed to the public good, we have a track record of research that impacts society and makes a real difference to people’s lives through improvements to health and well-being, infrastructure, creativity, economic growth, business and civil society.

97.3% of graduates at DMU are in work or further study six months after graduating - putting the university in the top 20 for graduate employability, according to the latest Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education survey. Students from DMU are working at companies and institutes such as BMW, Calvin Klein, Cummins, HSBC, the House of Commons, Network Rail and Riot Games.

De Montfort University (DMU) has a dedicated student support team to help deal with any issues you may have before, during and after your studies. Whether it’s finding accommodation and settling in, to arranging academic support – the support team can help point you in the right direction.
At DMU, we are dedicated to creating an environment that focuses on students' health and wellbeing to help them to live a healthy, happy and productive life. That includes providing resources that support their development and studies, helping them to succeed and to achieve their full potential.
Housing services
- All of our accommodation is within easy walking distance of our redeveloped campus. As we’re on the edge of the city centre, this also means Leicester’s many attractions are only minutes away.
- We offer you the choice of 13 halls of residence with 4,100 rooms, which means you’ll get the chance to meet lots of new people.
- There are a variety of contract lengths to suit your needs, with prices ranging from £99 to £197 per week. All our halls are self-catered, giving you the freedom to come and go as you please.
Library services
The Kimberlin Library is open to students for essential study and browsing of print collections. For those not on campus we are also offering a postal loans service for items available in print format only.
ICT services
eduroam allows De Montfort University staff and students to take their wireless devices to other educational institutions worldwide, that support eduroam, and connect using their De Montfort University username and password.
Medical services
The Wellbeing team offers counselling to give students the opportunity to talk in confidence with someone who is impartial and separate from work, social and family life. The team also offers a fantastic range of #HealthyDMU masterclasses, including mindfulness and many more.
Campus life
Over the past couple of years we have invested £136 million into developing our vision of the ‘campus of the future’ and now that vision has become a reality.
The centrepiece of the new-look campus is the towering Vijay Patel Building, which houses our art and design subjects. Designed inside and out with arresting architecture and filled with innovative, sector-leading teaching facilities, the building defines DMU’s commitment to creative education.
Sports facilities
The De Montfort University has signed up to the UNIversal Gym membership Scheme with British Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS) As an affilate to the programme, students and staff will have access to fitness facilities at over 50 different university venues across the UK, at no additional cost. The programme will allow staff and students returning home, visiting friends or working away on placements, the oppurtunity to continue with regular fitness routines.
Student clubs
DMU Alumni Clubs allow alumni to meet in their locality, connect with each other, friends, students and staff, and enhance the overall post-university experience. Each club is unique and differs from the others, but they all share the common interest of bringing alumni together and supporting DMUs global community.

170 of our courses are accredited by professional bodies, meaning you can gain significant exemptions from professional qualifications after graduation. You can see all of our accredited courses below. Leicester Castle Business School is accredited by a number of accounting bodies, e.g. ACCA, CIMA and ICAEW.

De Montford - a solid foundation in Architecture
I began DMU after a one month pre-architecture program at the Carnegie Mellon University. Pittsburg, USA. My overall study experience gave me the ability to do designs for my uncle by the end of my second year. Now in my 3rd year, I am refining my skills. DMU provided the staff and opportunities needed to really get me skilled as an architect. We are travelling to Berlin this year. My overall study experience is A+. A great background to enable me choose my interest in my Masters program.
