History

Founded by the University of London in August 1994, as a federation of nine of the University's research institutes in the humanities and social sciences, was officially opened on 15 March 1995.

Many of its institutes already functioned as centres of international excellence to facilitate advanced study in their fields for the benefit of the national and international scholarly communities.

Education

The School of Advanced Study is a unique environment in which to study the humanities. The School strives to reflect the latest developments in thinking across the humanities disciplines it supports and to ensure that its programmes reflect this. We are also aware that the needs of our students are constantly changing. With that in mind, the School continually reviews the its programmes and, as part of that process, reserves the right to alter or discontinue them.

Research

The School of Advanced Study brings together eight internationally renowned research institutes to form the UK's national centre for the support of researchers and the promotion of research in the humanities.

The School:

Provides a research base for an international community of scholars
Inspires, develops, and supports innovative research initiatives and networks

Enhances the dissemination of the research of others, and related activities, beyond what they or their institutions could achieve alone

Provides specialist research training at master's, doctoral, and postdoctoral levels - locally, nationally, and internationally
Adds value to the work of researchers in the humanities and social sciences throughout the UK

Career

Our mission is to advance the employability and career prospects of all our community, whatever they study, wherever they live and whatever their career stage by delivering high quality, innovative and globally informed careers education, information and guidance.
