Behind the lecture halls
Studying at the Faculty of Philology (University of Belgrade) has been a fantastic and enriching experience. Theres so much to do - different activities, opportunities, workshops - that it feels like theres always something exciting happening around. The variety of subjects is really impressive, giving you a strong academic foundation. The professors are, for the most part, absolute pros. They know their stuff and help you learn a ton, though youve got to be ready to put in a lot of work outside of class. This isnt the kind of place where you can just coast, but the effort definitely pays off. One of the best things about this place is the vibe. Everyones super warm and friendly, from the students to the staff. You can always count on help when you need it, whether its advice from a professor or a quick chat with a fellow student. The faculty itself is pretty cool. Theres a coffee shop, a bookstore and plenty of libraries and spots to either study or just take a breather. They even host guest lectures with teachers from other countries, which brings a nice international flavor to the experience. Of course, there are a few downsides. The mandatory subjects that you get to choose from lists can feel like too much, especially when theyre not directly related to your major. Some years, I had more of those than my main courses, which was a bit frustrating. All in all, though, the Faculty of Philology offers much more than just education, it truly is a place where you grow, connect and discover new perspectives.
High quality staff, outdated curriculum
Having had access to multiple faculties within the university, I have had the opportunity to gain a broader insight into many of its strenghts and weaknesses. First and foremost, the university indeed employs excellent staff with great knowledge, however with a lack of motivation to update the study materials and approach with current trends and practical implications. The curriculum generally follows a more traditional path, and the books were typically written in the previous century with very little or no additional materials to provide a fresher perspective. The tests require pure reproduction with no evaluation of actual understanding and the students ability for practical use of the content learned. It would be great if the excellent professors could strive to include this practical component more into their teaching approach so that students are better prepared for the actual working environment they will find themselves in upon finishing their studies.
Lacking clinical settings
School of Medicine within University of Belgrade is in good standing among other Medical Schools in Serbia. However, students are often pointed to learning too much theoretical things that they will not be able to use when working with patients. The program is lacking clinical skill learning opportunities for students, especially senior year students who will soon graduate, becoming young doctors.
