Description
Ph.D. Candidates funded by the EUI contracting states receive a monthly scholarship/stipend and do not pay the programme's tuition fees.
Benefits
Monthly Grant: €2,050. The FWO will provide a monthly grant for the first three years of EUI Ph.D. Programme. The fourth year will be covered by the EUI, which will offer an EUI Fourth Year Grant (1,620 EUR per month in 2025 in addition to other allowances). FWO will provide a top-up for the fourth fellowship year, so the grant will remain the same over the four fellowship years (namely 2,050 €/month).
Eligibility
- At the start of the fellowship (1 September 2025), candidates must be holder of a Master's degree awarded by a Flemish university institute. It is possible to exceptionally deviate from this requirement in case you have AND the Belgian nationality, AND you have obtained your Master’s degree in one of the countries of the European Economic Area or Switzerland AND you are sufficiently anchored in Flanders.
- The Master's degree, on the basis of which the application is submitted, must have been obtained not earlier than three years before the deadline of the call.
- On the submission deadline of the call, you have 18 months scientific seniority at most.
- You can apply maximum two times for the same fellowship.
- You have not previously received an EUI fellowship or an FWO fellowship (not even in partly).
- You agree with the Research Integrity Clause.

Application deadline
Candidates applying for admission with an FWO grant should write their project proposal in English and attach a complete research project, including hypothesis, methodology and work plan to the online EUI application. Since a first selection of the proposals is performed by the FWO, this is a specific requirement at FWO side, regardless of the EUI department where a proposal is submitted.
